SAFETY AROUND HELICOPTERS

It is important to follow these safety guidelines from the moment you come in contact with a helicopter at ground level to the point you travel in the air and upon arrival at your destination. These guidelines will ensure your personal safety, the safety of the flight crew and incidentally the journey from start to finish.

  • First off, never go towards the tale of the helicopter. The tail rotor that is located at the back of most helicopters is extremely dangerous. It can be hard to see and therefore do not go under the tail boom to get to the other side, but rather walk around the front of the helicopter in view of the pilot.
  • In this context always walk in front or to the direct side view of the pilot when approaching or exiting the helicopter.
  • It is also good practice to always crouch and never carry an item above your head when exiting a helicopter to avoid contact with the rotor system. If the aircraft is parked alongside a hill, do not exit upslope.
  • Never drive a vehicle under the rotor blades whether the blades are turning or stationary as even the slightest contact can damage the helicopter.
