Sigiriya

Sigiriya is the site of an ancient rock fortress that dates to the period between 477-495 CE. This was the palace of King Kashyapa who selected this site as his new capital city. Sigiriya is a UNESCO listed World Heritage Site and considered to be one of the most valuable historical sites on the Island. It is renowned for its frescoes, gigantic lion’s feet, moonstones, complex waterways, fountains, ponds, canals, and gardens. Its most stunning feature is the “mirror wall’- which was so well shone in ancient times, that the king could view his reflection in it. The inscriptions found on the mirror wall show that the Sigiriya Rock Fortress was a tourist destination in Sri Lanka for many centuries.
